US teen star Leif Garrett has been charged with possession of heroin

US teen star Leif Garrett has been charged with possession of heroin after being arrested in a Los Angeles underground station last week.

Los Angeles County police officers approached the 48-year-old singer and actor at the station where he allegedly admitted having heroin in his shoe.

Garrett is currently free on bail and is due to appear in court on 24 February.

He was also previously arrested for heroin possession in 2006.

The actor was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation after opting out of a drug treatment programme as an alternative.

Garrett made several films in the 1970s and 1980s including 1983's The Outsiders, alongside Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Tom Cruise. He has also released 10 albums.
